The city of Winston Salem is great fun for vacationing partly because this NC city has a wonderfully rich and textured history! Winston Salem was founded in 1913 when the merging of Winston, an industrial, textile, and tobacco center, and Salem a town settled in 1766 by German Moravian (Protestants) immigrants came together.
Winston Salem well known for its historical worth, is a well loved vacationing spot. Winston Salem is located in Forsyth County, in what is known as the Triad area of North Carolina. People come from everywhere locally and abroad to visit the attractions in the area.
The well-known “OLD SALEM” area is located in the heart of downtown Winston Salem. OLD SALEM was restored to an authentic and comprehensive historical attraction, and has four individual museums.
Other New Attractions in Winston Salem include: Sci-Works featuring hands on exhibits, a planetarium, and environmental park leading to nature trails. The Steven’s Center (once a silent movie theatre), has 1,380 seats at two levels for concerts and performances. In the fall, the last full weekend of September while leaves are changing their color the “Fiddle & Bow Country Dancers” meet every Tuesday night from 8pm-10pm, and host the Annual “FEET RETREAT” Weekend with local bands, and dancing. The “Ernie Shore Field” built in 1956 hosts weekly baseball games of Winston Salem’s own team the Warthogs. There is a firework display after every game.
Other attractions in the area are: “Korner’s Folly” located close by in Kernersville only 10 miles east of Winston Salem. Named the “Strangest House in The World” It is known for its height-100 feet tall, its 25 foot ceilings and odds and ends windows and doors in every room, not to mention a movie theatre.
Although the City of Winston Salem is a great vacationing spot, other brand new and good old greats lie within the state of North Carolina. The Outer Banks and Crystal Coast are located at the seashore, with 100 miles long of barrier islands along the Atlantic Ocean. Mount Airy, home of Actor/Singer Andy Griffith, is what offered the inspiration for Mayberry on The Andy Griffith Show. The original patrol car used in the program is on site there as well.
Waynesville, N.C. heading west out of Winston Salem offers a Cherokee Indian Reservation with restaurants, hotels, and a large gambling casino.
In western North Carolina, sit the Great Smoky Mountains. Known for the tunnel, the iron horse, and its railroad history.
